David,
If you look at the prices you will see that 2007 is about half the price of 2006 so I think that's a no brainer providing you can wait ![]() Ken "David Guest" <dpguest@bestweb.net> wrote in message news:45db4aa4@wic040d.... >I was all set to order delphi 2006, when suddenly Codegear announces Delphi >2007... > > Some advice please, which should I order? > > I have no need for .Net or C# ... just applications for win32... of > course, I would like PHP as well but that is a different ide.... |

I have now read everything they have on Delphi 2007 and it is definitely
an upgrade from 2006, thus, since I have no real interest in the other languages supported by 2006, going straight to Delphi 2007 seems to make sense. I assume that NexusDB and all the other major component suppliers will upgrade their products to be compatible with 2007. I tried to pre-order it, but it is not yet available in their online store. |

Dave
The cost is about the same. For a person with D7 it is $460 to go to D2006 studio and $399 for the new D2007 win32. I am curious if the new D2007 win32 will be included in the next 2007 studio product and what the upgrade cost of that will be. If it was around the $500 mark to go from D7 to the next studio version which included the new D2007 win32 you would hate to have spent roughly $500 twice. This would apply only to someone looking the additional ..net and C# parts of the product. If one were to order the upgrade from D7 to the present D2006 studio product for the $460 I wonder what the upgrade cost would be to the next studio version. If you were to add support to your purchase of a D7 to D2006 studio upgrade for I think it was around $360 you would get the next studio product for free assuming they come out with it within the year of your support contract. Making the upgrade cost the $360 you spent for the support. All hinges on the new D2007 win32 being in the next studio version and it coming out within a year of your upgrade purchase. Like Dave I have been considering upgrading and the above thoughts are my sitting on the fence thoughts. I did see one gotcha in the new D2007 win32 and it probably does not apply to most and that is it requires Win Xp pro not the home edition. For someone running just Xp and D7 it means most likely moving to Vista before you planned to run D2007 win32. Open to discussion on upgrade scenarios, I did email codegear on if D2007 win32 is in the next version of the studio product. I did have an email from them awhile back on the upgrade issue recomending I add the support to an upgrade from D7 to D2006 as they had plans to treat those with support very well. No indication what that meant but I assume getting new products deals. It pushed the cost of a D7 to D2006 upgrade over $800 and I am still thinking about it. Interesting....
It looks like 2006 can create programs that run on XP Home, but 2007 cannot... it can only create programs that run on XP Pro SP2...that is rather strange and limiting. |

As the codegear website says, the 2007 version will allow Vista compliance for
win32 apps created by it, including theme support...blah blah..etc. <g> What I'd like to know, but couldn't find info for, was if a 64bit compiler is being made available in the 2007 version. At work we're starting to feel the pinch of our application not working 'as advertised' under Vista. It could be an Office 2007 thing but if it's not we still need something that'll help resolve the issue and to do that I'll need to get time (!!!) to setup a Vista Delphi dev environment. I know a 64 bit compiler has nothing to do with stability, but a 64 bit version of our app has also been requested and, since 64 bit desktop chips have been available for such a long time, is putting Delphi development at a slight disadvantage in regards to memory addressing. <sighs> I have all sorts of clients. Some running Win2K, some on the bleeding edge. Guess which client(s) requested the 64 bit Vista compliant version? <g> It's not entirely a BAD thing though. That is not very likely as the only difference between XP Home and XP pro are network limitations. -- Regards Peter Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/ Outgoing emails scanned by Trendmicro Internet Security |

It improves on the win32 part of BDS 2006, but lacks things that will be in BDS 2007. > I did have an email from them awhile back on the upgrade issue > recomending I add the support to > an upgrade from D7 to D2006 as they had plans to treat those with > support very well. If you get D2007 for win32 with Software Assurance, I believe you might get BDS 2007 too. Check with CodeGear sales. -- Eivind Bakkestuen Nexus Database Systems Pty Ltd |
