January, 1955 at age 19. As an IBM Customer Engineer trainee.

I went right into the first CE class for the IBM 704 main frame system,
which had not yet finished development. (Gene Amdahl's project.) I
actually helped finish the debugging of the development model at the
IBM South Road Laboratory. Gene was a little nonplussed when a "still
wet behind the ears 20 year old kid" (I had just turned 20.) found a
design error in the TIX instruction... and fixed it. <g> After a
one-on-one meeting he said: "Damn! You're right." <g>

I always loved HEPBURN and the old computer movies with all the tapes
and "flashing" lights!!!

That was the good thing about IBM, though it was fading by the time I
arrived in August 1965.
